Monkey Business

Monkey Business - c 2008 Lynda Lehmann

I've done several new paintings in the past week, hoping to have more work for my upcoming show. I had great fun with this one, and that's probably somewhat obvious to you in looking at it. It's 24 x 36 inches, painted in acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas. It's very colorful and full of gesture and motion, but my eye is usually comfortable with chaotic compositions. This one is somewhat surreal and musical, with an organic feeling to it. I'm not quite sure whether the bottom right corner is finished. It's seems a bit empty to me, as if it's calling for a little more articulation of the detail there.

Another problem for me is that at times I prefer this as a vertical composition, and other times I prefer it on the horizontal. This is a mystery to me, as I usually have a strong preference one way or the other. How do you like it best?

I'll try to post a few more of my new works before my show, and later on, photos of the Opening. Thanks for your input and support! I wish you a creative and fulfilling weekend!

  1. Horizontal for me - looks overbalanced the other way :)

  2. Hi! I agree with most of your remarks about the image. By the way, I do love it.

Now! As for the bottom right corner! I like it the way it is.

As it appears to me to be a gateway that leads the observer (me) to think there is something behind the rest of the image.

As to what they (I) think is behind the image, is left to their (my)imagination.

Well, that's my two cents worth!

    All the best!

  3. No monkey business, they are master pieces!! Lovely ones, Lynda!

Both, vertical and horizontal are great, just that it depends on the background mounting. Right placement does enhance the art.

  5. Hey Lynda, I love them both ways, they are cool either way, with my Moon shots the ones I get blown up to 36x24, I change them up when I hang them.

  7. oooh thanks for posting this Lynda !!
I love the landscape version but I have a real preference for the vertical format ...probably because I paint portraits LOL...
I love the colours and patterns either way ;)

  8. Loz - Thanks for stopping by, and for your opinion. I'm still undecided. I most often like art in portrait layout, as it seems more visually dynamic to me. Except in the case of landscapes which of course, are usually better in a horizontal plane!

Peter - Thanks for your thoughtful comment. I think I will likely leave that corner the way it is. Although I never know what corner my fickle eye will turn in a week or two! :)

  13. Kim, I almost always prefer a vertical format. I think it's more visually dynamic and goes better with my very active, high-energy compositions.

I hope your shoulder is coming along. I will ask my painter friend about hers, when I see her, to see if she can offer any advice.

  14. Lynda I tell you I always love this type of paintings, so mysterious. Don't really have an answer to vertical or horizontal option, because I think it all depends how you frame it or where you put it. These are really nice pieces of work, it is almost like the previous purple orchid is hiding behind. Anna :)
