Evidence of the Infinite

Evidence of the Infinite - Image c Lynda Lehmann.

Although my husband works from 7:30 in the morning until between 4:30 and 6:00 every evening, we try to make time for at least a half-hour sunset boat ride. After a full day of construction work, dirt, and stress, it's good for the soul!

Here's a glorious expanse of sky at sunset that makes one ponder the mysteries at the heart of the universe. At least in has that effect on me..... Shot from a rocking aluminum row boat in the middle of a Maine lake. I never tire of photographing sunsets or golden-rimmed clouds: it's a form of madness. I hope it inspires you as it did me.

I have a whole series of images from just this one magnificent sunset that changed from moment to moment like a vast kaleidoscope. I hope to post these soon, so you can see the amazing variety of spectacle that unfolded within a short period of time, maybe 15 minutes or so. I'm finding the time to post a lot this week, at least so far, but please don't feel any pressure to comment on all of them!

  1. Lynde:

The image is beautiful. I love sunsets. Earlier on, my wife and I used to drive down to the beach just to watch the sunsets. Very romantic.

By the way, I didn't know you were back. How exciting.

    Happy trails.

  7. Lovely shot. Whenever possible, I make myself (& my camera,) available for the sunset. It was a longtime hobby when I lived in Canada. Now that my life's settling down again, I'm happy to resume the activity.

  11. Hi Mark!

Yes, sunsets are romantic and uplifting. Sometimes they leave me downright speechless--though speechless doesn't happen to me very often!

Glad to see you. I'll be over to visit soon. Hope all is well in your world.

  13. Waterrose,

I think at Cafe Press you can make calendars. I would like to do that but can never seem to get to it...

How are you doing with your ventures?

  15. Michael, I try to walk most days too. It's a good chance to "own" oneself and make peace with the world. Plus, all those wonderful sights and smells...(in our neighborhood, there is always the aroma of someone's delicious roast floating in the afternoon air)

  16. Kriz, it's really not much leisure after my husband's 12-hour work days, but it hits the spot--a wonderful nightcap!

Glad to see you again, Kriz. Hope you're getting out with your camera a lot.

  18. Janice, you're lucky that you can choose! I think I'm so overwhelmed by all the things I love in nature that I turn to abstraction, partly to seek some underlying creative force to express. Nature is infinitely beautiful and I agree with you that somehow, sunsets move us at the deepest level! Like the faces of newborns...

  19. Evlahos,I agree, and hope this image WILL have that effect on everyone who looks at it.

You have many beautiful and inspiring images of cliffs, islands, and the sunsets seen in Greece!

Isn't it interesting how people all over the world perceive and love all of nature's forms of beauty? This love really IS a force that can bring us together. That's one of the reasons why making art and photography is such a good thing!

  20. Lana, it's a good thing to do! Feeds the soul...

I didn't know you lived in Canada, too!

  21. hi Lynda..
I don't think anything in this world can be more refreshing and relaxing...
a view of water with the sunrises..
or sunsets like the one you have captured in this magnificent photo...makes one feel very grateful :) :)

  22. Kim,I am indeed grateful. Especially after going through a bout of breast cancer five years ago. The shock of it made me extremely fearful, despairing, and doubtful of a future--and each time I visited such a beautiful place, I felt deeply grateful for the opportunity to be there again. Not everyone is so fortunate.

  23. This is a beautiful photograph, Lynda. Do you get sunsets like this often? Where I live in northern England, we only get golden sunsets like this very occasionally, but when I see them I find it hard to take my eyes away.

  24. Simon, for every gorgeous sunset I bear witness to, there are probably 20 that pass uneventfully.

I rush out to catch them, but usually the best ones occur when I'm without my camera and unprepared!

  25. Kia ora Lynda,
Beautiful photo. Each sunrise and sunset so unique in its own way. We must protect those views, and it is getting to be a very hard fight. Thanks for keeping me inspired.

  27. Lynda this is beautiful, and what a nice habit to have - I do the same with Matthew, he loves outside, and at three months he was very aware and knew he was going outside. Thanks for sharing, sunsets are always inspirational. Anna :)
