Reflecting on the Power of Reflection

We cannot hold time or the seasons, although often enough we would like to put a slice of time in our pockets. Isn't is grand that we are gifted with the power of memory? Without memory we could neither savor the beauty and joy of our experiences, nor learn from them.

Carrying my camera allows me to "capture the rapture," so to speak, by shooting the inspiring sights I see around me every day. So today I will reflect on the beauty of the past summer season, even as time tries to erase its impact on me.

In this photo you see the very fleeting beauty of reflections on the side of a wood boat on a mid-summer's day. The reams of light jiggle and dance like the wind or a fickle tide, reminding the viewer of just how delicate and evasive moments of beauty can sometimes be.

One ephemeral sight I have yet to capture is the sunlight bouncing off the water and shimmering on the trunks and undersides of the pine branches at the lake's edge. I hope to do so in the near future.

Life is precious! Every moment carries the potential for inspiration and yes, even bliss.

  3. Lynada I could spend all day here on your blog. Everything is just so beautiful.

This is outstanding and I agree does capture the fleeting moment. I can see and feel the movement in the water.

I have some reflections and abstracts I have been holding back.

Perhaps they will get up next week some time!!

  4. Hi Dear Lynda,

Having grown up on a lake and in all kinds of boats 3/4 of the year for years, I took one look at this glorious photo and knew instantly what it was.

Still, to this day, when I see a water and light patterns like this my whole insides INSTANTLY go back to my youth and the sounds of water lapping the canoe or row boat.

I know exactly what you are talking about when you mention the light on the pine trees. Thousands of times I saw this. And even as a kid I NEVER tired of seeing it. It was just part of an overall beauty that wove itself into my soul to leave an idelible imprint that will never wash away. It's as if I AM the water and the light.

My most favorite photos of mine are the thousands and thousands I've taken of light on the water, in the water, on the bottom of creek, reflecting on trees and stones and sandy banks, dapple patterns and impressionistic colors, patterns all caused by the light and ripple of water.

It is a whole world for me that I easily can be lost in for an entire day and the next day and the next and next and next.

I captured all four season of one little local creek, from spring to spring and am working on putting together photos books of those shots.

What I need is a better camera. Eventually I will get one. Nature photography is probably my #1 passion, and water, flowers and shadows are at the top of the list.

Wow, I came here, saw this one photo, read your beautiful poem and all this passion just pours out. I LOVE that about you. I am just sorry I'm not here more often. Work has been intense lately. But all good. It is all moving me closer to getting a MUCH better camera. LOL!!!

I think of you very often and will get that link for your site to you soon. Do you need code with it or just the logo? I have the photo/logo ready (rather 3 for you to choose from).

Sending so much love and respect. You are a joy, Robin

  6. Kia ora Lynda,
Beautiful as always, your words have become as poetic and moving as your photos. One of my favourite sounds of water is gentle waves splashing on the side of my canoe.

  8. There is something meditative and calming about reflections in water-- the movement in water.
