The Metaphysics of Cloth

The Metaphysics of Cloth - c Lynda Lehmann

This 9" x 12" watercolor reflects my fascination with finding beauty in the transient and accidental, such as the folds of a towel or laundry dropped on the floor, and resonates with my general love of texture and topography. I see texture as the most universal and ever-present level of form. This is one of my older paintings.

I have long been wanting to re-visit the idea of a series like this: many different, flowing and graceful configurations of cloth. I'm finding it really difficult to work towards all my goals, but I know that I'm fortunate to have a number of compelling creative interests (even if they drive me crazy!)

I haven't posted in more that two weeks, because we've been very busy with home-building and renovating projects, as we are each summer. And our daughter is getting married next week, so that is a real sea-change life event. I'm fighting the inclination to feel "very old!" I'm joyous for her, but also feeling a bit melancholy. Where have the years gone?

I hope you are all well, not feeling too uncomfortable with this summer heat, and finding time to pursue your passions. I hope to return to blogging more regularly in August. See you soon!

  1. Dear Lynda, it is so cool that I have a picture of you in my mind and you are more beautiful and vivacious than any computer photo can convey. You energy is just bursting with life. Lucky me to experience that when we talked. Such a joy that stayed with me for days.

This painting fascinates me and is very lovely, hauntingly lovely. I completely resonate with the way your are drawn to textures, colors, shapes, shadow and plays of light in the world around you. It IS you. And it is so magical and refreshing for me to have a reflection in your. One day maybe will take our cameras and walk the edge of a stream or pond in Maine, or canoe it. I would so love that.

I am very blessed to be connected with you and honored by your caring, kindness, and astounding beauty in all that you are and do. Much love dear friend. Robin

  4. I hear you about time flying. A recent discussion about that very thing with my husband has resulted in plans to drive West next May to see some of the beauty America has to offer. :)

  5. Hey Lynda,

The Metaphysics of Cloth...b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! I looked at it and saw feminine curves which offers an undeniable sensuality to the painting. Auguri, cara mia!

Oh, I think that all mothers of brides go through the same thing: their baby getting married is like "reality" is slapping them in the face.
Another cycle of life is beginning, my darling...soon, Grand-mother...

Big hug and it is hot as hell over here...
