Today's Thought On Art: Elements of The Visual Language

Untitled Gray - c Lynda Lehmann

I believe the "logic" of abstract art is purely an internal logic: a logic of the visual language. Some or many elements compete for various positions in the totality of the piece, and those elements can be compared to the elements of spoken language.  Some areas are dominant, like the subject of a sentence.  Some carry the "action," as a verb does.  Other areas of the composition are transitional and create linkage between one area and another, kind of like a preposition.

This is just my own perception. But in my thinking, I have run into this metaphor again and again.  And I'm fascinated by the language comparison: in this case, with the analogous visual parts making up the analogous (visual) "whole."

  3. Hi Lynda,

There can be indeed a parallel between the abstract and linguistics. Art in itself is a language that is spoken through the soul.

It is good to see you back at the blogosphere, my darling :D.

    Cheers

  4. Linda, you never cease to amaze me. I used a Kandinksky as a study, and while I painted, the language came through, and became music. I'll find it and post a copy.
I was hoping that you had something I could buy to use for the top of my first blog. If you have something, direct me to wherever your posting it for sale. If not, I could use the study and give Kandinksky the credit, so I don't break any copyrights.
I'm trying to get back online on a daily basis, but life keeps getting in the way. I am looking forward to have the time to go through all your work for the last two years. I hope you are well, my friend. Warmest regards, scribadiva

  6. Linda, are you well? Good to see you. I know, life has thrown me a lot of curve balls, too, of late. I hope you are doing well and as for the art, I don't know what you have in mind. I have a lot of abstract backgrounds on my Shutterstock site, if you want to look. My personal files are in the midst of massive reorganization and have been in disarray these past two years. Let me know when you're publishing on your blog again. I've not been posting, myself, in quite a long time except for a handful of exceptions. Be well.

I try to respond to comments whenever I can. I ALWAYS appreciate your visits and friendship, and I will reciprocate with visits to your site. Thanks for sharing parts of your blogging journey with me. I value each and every one of you.

NOTE: Please, no more memes, schemes, or awards. They're fun and they may help us to know each other better, but I'd rather spend the time reading your posts and having you READ mine!

Happy blogging!
