Moon Lakes and Night Voices

Moon Lake - c Lynda Lehmann

i cannot sleep.

a pale shroud has overtaken the darkened world
and shadows quiver in rhythm of moonlight.

released by luster of illumination,
voices rise from deep recesses of mind and forest

where dreams and creatures meet
to share mystery.

their discourse rises on sleek silver strands, to the night wind.

life force has the wisdom to know its own sustenance,
the Life Force whose glow burns brighter in its knowing.

voices merge--chirps and squawks, calls and whispers--
melding past and future, history and infinity
to tell of their knowing.

and i know that their knowing is so much greater than mine.

i cannot sleep.

i drink as well, from the vast cup of silence,
the silky intervals of chastened night
that channels the voices...

those murmurs of God and Infinity that
all at once
calm and discomfort my soul.

i cannot sleep.

i must not sleep.

Layers

Texture is the most enduring and ubiquitous underpinning of form:...certainly a calming, meditative and appealing world for both the eye and mind.

Texture is everywhere we look, and nature's paintbrush is capable of stunning feats. I hope you enjoy the rough-hewn beauty of tree bark as much as I do.

A Pristine Land

When I see such a clear and clean view, no litter or pollution apparent to the naked eye and the air sweet and pungent with the scent of pine, I wonder how the land looked 200 years ago, before the Industrial Revolution. I can not begin to imagine the sparkling natural beauty of the landscape. Imagine how much happier we would be if we were PART of this environment, cherishing, protecting, and enjoying it, instead of using it up for profit or simply moving THROUGH it at jet speed. Amazon

Biodiversity is important for the continuation of life on Earth. Every species that becomes extinct effects every other species in the food chain, either directly or indirectly. If you are not already a member of a reputable environmental organization, I recommend the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Union of Concerned Scientists, or the Sierra Club. If you would like to learn more about earth stewardship issues, please visit one of these organizations on the web. Or join one of the many others that deal with environmental issues, from how to store or dispose of nuclear waste, to biodiversity, food safety, fuel efficiency, depletion of of Earth's resources, Global Warming, etc. I'll post some of these sites on the side bar of this blog, just as soon as I can get to it. You and I have only one precious life to live, and collectively, we have one planet to protect. Indeed, it is our home--and our children's home. Our only home.

"Amazon" is an abstract expressionist painting that to me, suggests a jungle teeming with foliage and all manner of organic form; sunlight filtering through the lush canopy; and perhaps the gift of fresh rainwater swirling into the river. Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas, 36 x 48 inches. This painting is available at www.LyndaLehmann.com . Image and text c Lynda Lehmann.

Stream

Nothing excites me more than being in the forest. It's as if all the kinks in my brain relax and I'm able to think new thoughts while breathing in the grandeur of the universe. Who could ask for more than a trickling stream, the bright confetti of autumn leaves, a blue sky overhead, and the musk of the forest? Image c Lynda Lehmann.

The Forest Floor in Autumn

For me, this painting evokes the sweet, damp air of the woods in autumn, when the forest floor is vibrant with the litter of fallen leaves layered over moss and lichen--a panoply of rich colors, odors, and textures.

In advance of its inevitable slide into winter, Earth yields her bounty, which you can smell in the air and feel underfoot. And the sweet musk in the twilit air of the autumn afternoon speaks at once, of both decay and regeneration.

Some of the most interesting life forms lurk in the quiet, hidden places guarded by tree roots and boulders. There the emerald moss spreads, unnoticed, and fungi branch in their own design and designated life song.
