Here are a few photos of one of our favorite places in Acadia. Sand Beach is easily accessible from the Park Loop Road and is one of the most serene and scenic of the spots we visited. Looking at the tranquil surface of the azure water, one could hardly believe that the flow in this cove was attached to the ocean! I'm sure it kicks up at times, but on a calm day the tranquility of the place is spellbinding. I've been there only in September but I'm sure that in the summer months it's a great place to swim, kayak, or just take the kids for a day on the beach.
Add to the sensuous curve of the beach the soft white sand, the influx of turquoise sea, and the majesty of the surrounding cliffs crowned by mixed boreal and hardwood forest, you've got the ingredients for magic. I can envision spending many days there, watching the infinite movement of the water and its slightly more chaotic, hissing and foaming entry into the clusters of huge boulders at the edge of the beach, while the enchantment grows.
I apologize for the short post, but better short than not at all. I hope you enjoyed the photos and that you get to visit Acadia one day, if you haven't already.

Enchantment Before Twilight

| Bathed in Evening Light - Lynda Lehmann c 2011 NOTE: I have picked these two photos from my archives to post with this poem, as I could not shoot while paddling. But they don't do justice to the beautiful play of light, water and sky I witnessed on this occasion. Nor do my words suffice, but I write them in homage. |

Twice the River: An Autumn Encounter with Reflections in Still Water

| Twice the River - Image c Lynda Lehmann |
This view of a stream in the White Mountain National Forest on a still and sunny afternoon, pulled me in. The reflections are as mesmerizing as the scene itself, giving one twice the natural beauty to ponder. Reflections on a still, watery surface bring up many thoughts for me: multi-dimensionality, transience versus permanence, the possibility of parallel universes, the world as patterns of light, the nature of reality. And certainly, the ever-changing countenance of our natural world. Infinity....
I could lose myself in the deep woods for hours, if not days. Just being there is for me, a peak experience. Joyful encounter, there for the taking. Or should I say: "par-taking," as there is no element of plundering or stealing in my encounter. Except for taking home photographs, of course, which preserves the experience through time.
To find such beauty and joy: what serendipity!

What do you think of when you see a gorgeous sunset? Do you feel joyous? Or do you become a bit wistful, or maybe downright forlorn? Maybe you feel regrets for the past or hopes for the future. Or a nameless mix of strong emotions that you would not even try to identify....
For me the latter is the case. So many attitudes, perceptions, and emotions seem to surface in the face of that glory: a brilliant, flaming sky that signifies the end of another day of the life cycle. It's hard to separate or put into words what I'm thinking or feeling. Yet I'm grateful for the inspiration and catharsis of it.
I will think of all my blogging friends when I bear witness to the sunset tonight, and wish for each of you to experience much beauty and peace in your lives.

Rush of Water, Hiss of Foam - Cut and Edited
Sorry to repeat myself, but I think I've made a great improvement here, over my last post. This is a cut and edited version of my latest amateur beach movie. I've put back the original soundtrack with wind and water sounds. I hope you enjoy it. When the music pauses, listen to the waves!
I loved making it, and hope to learn more about the video editing software. It's on my long list of goals....
Thanks for your visit and for sharing this with me!

Glimmers of Solitude
A moment of quiet contemplation, surrounded by nature, will calm the beast in us. Most of the time, anyway...
Giving one's self permission to steal away for quiet moments is a good way to decompress, throw off the shackles of everyday busy-ness and the pursuit of creature comforts, to let some air into the soul. Where do YOU go, or what do you do, to take take pause and contemplate? Do you seek out a favorite natural setting, or do you just sit down near a sunny window with your favorite cup of tea or coffee? What works for you?
If we never live today, tomorrow never comes. This is one of the few things I feel certain of! May you have a wonderful day, lived in balance and harmony and mindfulness of the moment. Each moment of each day is a moment that will never come again.

Envisioning a Web of Light
Today was gray--a raw, damp, winter day. The solid stripes of snow slathered on the north sides of all the trees we saw along the roads we drove, had not yet melted or been blown off the bark by the wind. The dirty but otherwise undisturbed snow-cover gave the landscape a formidable look, reduced to a blatant, cold contrast of black and white. It was a day bereft of color and warmth. Snow and ice-sheathed and chilly, without a trace of color to behold in sky or forest, without the generous wafting scents or caressing breezes of spring.
Old Man Winter really is a stingy curmudgeon! I had to close my eyes to find an image that was warm and inviting, and I remembered summer days spent dangling ankles in river water and staring into endless reams of light thrown upon the lake by the nurturing sun. I came home and had to upload this image, to remind us all that warmer, more gentle and affirming days are on their way....
Impressionistic images like this are among my favorites. I could spend hours or days filling my "cup of beauty" with the shimmering patterns of sunlight on water and the pebbles underneath.

Sounds of Water
This short video presents sounds heard at the beach. First you will have to forbear the roar of a boat engine. But after that you will hear footsteps fading away on the spongy sand, the cries of seagulls and the sensuous, soothing sounds of flowing water. You can hear the peaceful sounds of children playing on nearby swings, their voices drifting in the background.
And of course, you can enjoy the patterns the water makes as it flows in from the open bay onto the beach, or over rocks and seashells. At one point, you can see the water flowing in an almost regular, diamond pattern, a configuration created by its deflection off the natural objects in its path. This makes me think of all the transferable and transforming energies in the universe, and patterns of physics, and those found in fractals....
You may notice at times, that the water seems to be bubbling out of the ground, perhaps from underground springs as much as from local drainage patterns.
I love to watch the ribbons of sunlight reflected on the water's undulating surface, and changes in the texture and rhythm of the waves.
I hope you enjoy my little nature video. One day I'll make another version with better editing! At present, I haven't the slightest command of my video editing software, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from sharing a bit of nature's beauty.

Inklings of the Sublime
Web of Light - c Lynda Lehmann 2009I filled up on the great "Cup of Beauty" that is our world, and have made using my senses into a sort of mantra. On college campuses, back in the sixties, the motto was "Tune out and turn on." I never felt that was the way to go, and I'm more sure of it than ever. My mantra is "Pause to receive, rejoice, and BE." I believe that the ubiquitous beauties of the world can lead us to transcendence, if we open our hearts. All we have to do is pause and focus. Very simple.
The sunlight or clouds playing on the lake surface and the infinite forms, colors, and patterns of lichen, are just a couple of examples of the natural beauty that astounded me. I feel spiritually rich.
I'd love to hear about some of the details of nature that fascinate you!

Serene Lake Scenes, Seen from the Shallows
Yesterday we worked until 4:30. It was time to call it a day, a bit earlier than usual. We needed a break so we took our small aluminum boat out. It's well-suited to shallow waters, and easier to handle than a canoe, when encumbered with a camera and bag.
We headed into the fresh-water marsh at the near end of the lake, and here are a few photos of the delightful sights we saw. I didn't get a good shot of the new beaver lodge--last year's is abandoned--but I'll post it when I get one.
As you can see, the most elegant and luminous golden grasses sparkled in the sparkling water, while emerging, fresh (as yet uneaten by beetles) lily pads with unfurling scalloped edges floated in the sun. In the photo above, what you see sprinkled in the water around the lilies, is pollen. Pollen was everywhere, in staggering amounts, washed into long necklace-like strands that coated plant life, boulders, and fallen snags. It seemed a fitting counterpoint to the ice lines etched on the flanks of rocks protruding from the water.
The globes of yellow lily flowers poked their heads above the water's surface like little echoes of the golden sun.
A large turtle basked on a sunken log, and he stayed still as we cut the engine to float nearer to him. When finally I made the mistake of moving my leg over an oar--we always take oars in case the engine fails--he disappeared.
We saw a Baltimore Oriole singing on a bush, seemingly a song of joy. Unfortunately my shots of the Oriole are blurry, so I left them out.
At the far end of the marsh we cut the engine again and sat transfixed and awed by the symphony of bull frog and peeper calls that echoed out of the shallows, filling the world and transforming it with sound, as the gentle breeze rocked the boat and caressed our cheeks.
Shadows of clouds in the water made an alluring parallel universe of ripples and reflections.
I just wanted to convey some of the splendor and pouring forth of new life that we were able to partake of. It's not easy to get quality shots from a moving (and rocking) 17-foot boat, but I try.
I only wish I could share it all with you in real-time.
I wish you peace and joy on Father's Day!

The River Wakens
River stirs to morning light.
She yawns, and stretches--sleek silver-blue--
past distant field and copse.
Though smoothly, she quickens,
unfolds to light,
flowing past verdant hills and tawny ledges,
