My Newest Abstract Acrylic Painting, "Metrimorphic III"

My newest painting, done this week, has both geometric and biomorphic features. Hence my coined term "Metrimorphic." I enjoy the bright colors floating on the surface of this composition, as well as the more subdued hues beneath them, just barely visible, emerging out of the black underpainting. "Metrimorphic" is 30 x 36 inches, painted in acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas.

I'm curious as to whether you as the viewer, get a sense of changing spatial relationships and multiple perspectives from this piece. I do, but I've always had an overactive imagination!

Tulip Rapture

I'm trying to get other house and garden tasks done by staying off the computer. As you can see, it doesn't work! Each time I go for a walk at this gorgeous season, I'm totally awed by the beauty I see. Of course I try to bring it home with me. Vowing to avoid photographing more flowers won't help. It's useless to try. I'm an addict!

Spring Flame

I'm uploading this image to wish you all a happy and bright spring! We passed the most beautiful flowers hanging in window pots outside a local Long Island restaurant today, and I shot them in spite of a stiff and maddening wind. I manipulated this one in Photoshop, repeating a single blossom to make the composition.

It was my first day out since last Tuesday. Seems I had a little bout of flu, and now I have to catch up on all your posts! I hope you've had a better week than I did, although all things considered, I have nothing to complain about. Happy spring!!

Warmth in February

Spending an afternoon in a greenhouse can take us away--as far away as the tropics. It's a great way to escape the winter blues! Although today wasn't bad, here in the Northest USA, for a winter afternoon. Bright sunshine and around fifty degrees, and very uplifting after many gray and gloomy, damp and raw days.

I thought I'd publish these orchid photos which I took today at our local arboretum, to give you a taste of warm, exotic places. Hope you've had a great weekend!

Monkey Business

Monkey Business - c 2008 Lynda Lehmann

I've done several new paintings in the past week, hoping to have more work for my upcoming show. I had great fun with this one, and that's probably somewhat obvious to you in looking at it. It's 24 x 36 inches, painted in acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas. It's very colorful and full of gesture and motion, but my eye is usually comfortable with chaotic compositions. This one is somewhat surreal and musical, with an organic feeling to it. I'm not quite sure whether the bottom right corner is finished. It's seems a bit empty to me, as if it's calling for a little more articulation of the detail there.

Another problem for me is that at times I prefer this as a vertical composition, and other times I prefer it on the horizontal. This is a mystery to me, as I usually have a strong preference one way or the other. How do you like it best?

Autumn Dazzle

I count among my blessings the freedom to enjoy nature's beauty a little bit each day. That's why I try to remember to carry my camera when I walk.

Today was blustery and cold, but the sky was an intense blue and the sunshine pouring over everything lit the trees on fire. I often miss seeing the peak color, but I managed to see some of it today. I will savor the glow long after this gorgeous, blazing afternoon has faded into dusk.

A picture speaks a thousand words. I hope you enjoy these photos, as I enjoyed taking them. I also hope that everyone who celebrated Thanksgiving felt blessed with warmth, good food, love, and spiritual riches.

Sundrenched: The Golden Rose

I really need to be painting for a large solo show I have coming up next winter. But of course, I keep getting sidetracked by all the beautiful spring flowers that are just bursting forth everywhere.

To make matters worse, I've just purchased a new camera, a 10.2 mega pixel Sony Alpha digital SLR. Not only do I need to test it out and begin to learn how to use it, but having it in my hands makes me want to photograph everything in sight. An old obsession is photographing rocks and minerals, my own little collection of colorful crystals. They're not perfect specimens, but they're gems to me; their beauty is fascinating. Of course I'm having trouble with getting sufficient depth of field when shooting these, close up. I'm hoping to find just the right settings for my crystal shots, but don't hold your breath!

Festival

Fire and Water

Like many people, I am fascinated by small and fleeting phenomena. Snow crystals on the window pane, the textures of water as it flows over pebbles in a crystal-clear stream, patterns of foam at seaside or patterns in licks of hearthflame--fleeting moments of nature, the elements in their changing forms, whose shape, texture, and shimmer evoke elemental and eternal things beyond our ability to comprehend. Science may illuminate the mechanism, but not the mystery, of nature's cycles. This painting is acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas, 24 x 36 inches. The Forest Floor in Autumn

For me, this painting evokes the sweet, damp air of the woods in autumn, when the forest floor is vibrant with the litter of fallen leaves layered over moss and lichen--a panoply of rich colors, odors, and textures.

In advance of its inevitable slide into winter, Earth yields her bounty, which you can smell in the air and feel underfoot. And the sweet musk in the twilit air of the autumn afternoon speaks at once, of both decay and regeneration.

Some of the most interesting life forms lurk in the quiet, hidden places guarded by tree roots and boulders. There the emerald moss spreads, unnoticed, and fungi branch in their own design and designated life song.
